Ignore The Goblins & Ghouls - A Message From Our Home Office

Mortenson Family Dental is committed to communicating with our patients and our community through our social media outlets, and we are proud to have been so successful that we have over 3,600 facebook friends. Unfortunately, friends don't always get along. What was intended to be a fun and competitive pumpkin carving contest, brought the goblins and ghouls out this season.

Mortenson Family Dental has a history of fun competition among our patients and employees, and because of the vulgarity of an unfortunate few, we had to discontinue this competition. We are a family company, and look forward to continuing our commitment to our patients and our community with other fun competitions throughout the year on our facebook page and website.

Pumpkin Carving Contest Has Been Cancelled

Patients, Fans & Friends,

Due to a series of unfortunate events surrounding our pumpkin carving contest, and allegations of threats made by contestants, fake profiles, fake votes and identity theft, we will be ending the pumpkin carving contest today.

Mortenson Family Dental office - including our social media outlets - operate under a set of core values: Safety, Courtesy, Cleanliness and Care. These attributes define our character as an organization. They are the foundation of our reputation and the underpinning of our continued success. Those core values also include supporting our community with many acts of kindness and caring.

Our organization does not condone the type of behavior that has been exhibited over the last 24 hours regarding this contest and we will not allow it to taint our goals of educating, informing and entertaining our fans, friends, and patients in a fun, clean and family-friendly environment.

More information regarding the distribution of prizes will be forthcoming. If you have any questions please feel free to email me by responding to this message or by emailing me at bgreen@mfdc.net.

Day of FREE Dentistry!

Do you or someone you know need dentistry but cannot afford it or are uninsured? Do you know a man, woman or child that is underprivileged and would benefit from free dentistry? We can help you!

Every year, Mortenson Family Dental participates in Dentistry from the Heart, a national non-profit organization dedicated to providing free dental care to those who may need it. It's just one of the many ways that we try to give back to our community!

This year, we will be offering our day of FREE dentistry at our Mortenson Family Dental, Crestwood office, located at 6408 West Highway 146, Suite 10 in Crestwood on October 16, 2010 from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Registration will begin promptly at 7:45 a.m. All dental work will be performed by our own Mortenson Family Dental doctors and staff, who volunteer their time and resources to host this event.

One filling, extraction or cleaning will be performed on each individual. Please take time to share this opportunity with your family, friends, co-workers or anyone that may need dental care. We'll see you there!

If you have questions about this event, post your comments here on our blog, on our Facebook Fan Page Wall, our Twitter stream or feel free to email me at bgreen@mfdc.net.

The Effects Of Tobacco On Oral Health

Is tobacco bad for oral health?

Yes, the use of tobacco -- in any form -- is hazardous to oral health. Most of us know the facts: Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer and is linked to heart and other lung-related diseases. In addition, the use of tobacco -- including cigarettes, pipes, cigars and smokeless "chewing" tobacco -- increases a person's risks for developing mouth cancer and throat cancer, and gum disease.

Tobacco products contribute to poor periodontal health, which is the leading cause of tooth loss. Cigarette smoke contains nicotine and nearly 1000 other chemicals that have been linked to cancer. Oral tissues in the mouth and throat are repeatedly exposed to these cancer-causing agents via the smoke. Cigar smoking is not safer than cigarette smoking. Those who smoke cigars are exposed to the same risks as cigarette smokers -- including oral and throat cancer and gum disease. Tobacco has adverse affects on your oral health. Giving up tobacco products will not only help prolong your life, but help save your teeth.

Is chewing tobacco safe?

According to the American Dental Association, smokeless tobacco is linked to tooth decay and loss of teeth, mouth ulcers and cancer. Chewing tobacco is similar to cigarettes and cigars in that it also contains toxins linked to cancer. Use of tobacco can cause the gums to swell, bleed or become inflamed -- resulting in periodontal disease.

Chewing tobacco may also cause receding gum lines, which expose the roots of the teeth and makes them vulnerable to decay. Research conducted in 1999 by the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, showed that chewing tobacco users were more likely to develop dental caries on the roots of their teeth, than those who didn't use tobacco.
